If we can learn to see and skillfully engage with both the presence
of happiness and the presence of suffering, we will go in the direction of
enjoying life more. Every day we go a
little farther in that direction, and eventually we realize that suffering and
happiness are not two separate things.
Consciousness
is a field with every possible kind of seed in it: seeds of love, compassion,
joy, and equanimity; seeds of anger, fear and anxiety; and seeds of
mindfulness. … To live in peace, you
have to be aware of your tendencies – your habit energies – so you can exercise
some self-control.
