All of us are set on
a trajectory by the circumstances of our birth, gender, class, family, and life
experiences. The sum total of all these
forces in our lives, and the choices we make concerning those forces, is our
karma. Most of us simply enact our
karma. Privilege begets privilege,
disadvantage begets disadvantage.
The spiritual
journey can be likened to waking up one day to find oneself mindlessly floating
down a river. The first step is to
acknowledge that we are in a river. The
second step is to understand that we have a choice about it.
